UPDATE 9 OCT 2021. Suspending the Saturday Niners again this year, down to four and a bit tenuous teams. I will try to rejuvenate one more time next season in our 09:00 time slot, but not looking favourable without lots of new recruits. Several of our members have joined now the University of Manitoba league, who will likely move forward to a 10:30 time. An e-mail was sent to many members and skips with the contact for the U of M Contact and the Assiniboine Crescentwood Saturday League.
UPDATE! 18 AUG! Now working U of M League to amalgamate as well, however, they hesitate to curl at 9 am. We Niners have five full teams and two half teams? AMCC League has three (+) teams (?). Our DLCC U of M league has a few teams (?) however they do not favour a 09:00 or even a 09:30 start. Would be wonderful if we could assemble a full 12 or even thirteen teams in our Amalgamated League(s).
2021-2022 NINERS CURLING SEASON (Posted 22 Jul 2021)
My friends, I am not overly confident we will have sufficient number of teams or individuals to do a proper season. Have only heard replies from 10 individuals in a first survey I had sent. Waiting for skips to now declare their present anticipated status.
Amalgamation(?). I am actively engaged in trying to find any struggling league like ours at the Assiniboine CC and Charleswood CC, so we can amalgamate.
Invite New Curlers. Now is the time also to vigorously recruit your friends and family to come try curling! Most people are coming out of hibernation and are hesitant to travel, and looking for something to do; looking for great friends.
Health Restrictions. Of course all these plans hinge on the COVID, so keep posted here and with your skip as to how we confidently transition to a new season of fun friends and eager foes!
Survey. The present survey results, based on a response by only 10 people is that 80% are returning, 20% are likely not. If the 80% returning rate can be extrapolated to all league members it does not fare well! So get recruiting!
2020-2021 NINERS CURLING SEASON
SATURDAY NINERS SEASON is collapsed after 68 years but we will be back!. We ended up with four teams (some partial) only. Attempts to amalgamate with an Assiniboine League were not successful, they had completely disbanded. DO NOT show up on Saturday 17th! There is a very last minute attempt to see now if the U of M wants our remnant Niners individuals in their league (11:00 am). If you are interested in joining the U of M League let me know ASAP so I can pass on your name to our DLCC Associates Director. If you need to collect equipment from your locker check with the icemaker for when the club is open or come during league play. SEE YOU NEXT SEASON! Watch here for further details. [posted 16 OCT 05:38]
Team Registration form UpLoaded 13 SEP. Will collect in first few games starting 17 Oct.
Update 12 Sep. Looks as though we have 8 Teams now, Cuthbert team evaporated. Convener will do one last check. Our Rental Fee for a league 20 game season is $6069 with taxes. Equals ~$760/team, or $190 for a 4 person team. Add the CCA and CurlMb Fees of $10 total per individual regular player. So not as bad as I was expecting! Approx $200 / per player (4 person team). Only concern is the Refund Policy. "In case of premature club closure fees will be used to cover fixed operational costs . If we are in a position to do so we will refund any remaining fees". I have a partial solution to that which I will distribute under cover of separate e-mail.
Niners Curling Starts. First Niners game is Sat 17 October. [ Posted 12 Sep 2020]
Game Flow. [Posted 12 Sep] Some interesting diagrams and movies about how the game will flow given that two sweepers head to head is not very smart: Mini Poster of Game Flow; Movie: Curling Through Covid Part 1, Curling Through Covid Part 2
UPDATE 20 AUG. We now have nine teams, one more than last season. Chris B has formed a team. So Nine teams means 4 sheets, 2 or 3 BYES each team. Fees will still be subject to how many Leagues are actually returning. Wait Out.

Good Day (I hope), Rick here. Saturday Niners Convener. [posted 10 Aug 2020]
For Niners Skips. I am looking to see how many of our curling Niners family are anticipating to return to curling in the 20-21 season. Your prompt reply to me skips by Friday will be appreciated. We ended the 19-20 season with eight teams; a league with less than six teams is pointless. So, please, if SKIPS (or their designates) could reply this week (by Fri 15 Aug) appreciated.
Registration Fees. We Niners were looking at a nice even $200 (at least) per season per player for a four-member team ($182.50 last season) even before COVID impacted. Since we pay by the sheet (presently) the individual registration fee will be governed also by the number of players. Partial refund (?) if a follow-on closure again (?).
I will hopefully compose a more substantial questionnaire/survey for individual member completion later this week.
DLCC Message. Here is extracts of the message received from Deer Lodge Board:
"Our first step for the season is to decide if we are going to be able to open in the current climate. [Attached is ] the Deer Lodge’s Return to Play guidelines for you to look over. Please be aware that these guidelines are subject to change as the recommendations change all the time. Skips, please look this over and talk to your team members to check and see if they are going to be returning to the Deer Lodge this year. If we lose too many curlers it may not be possible to open the club this season.
We are hopeful to have curling this year but we are looking to make sure we will have the curlers before we move into contracts etc."
Curl Manitoba Return to Play. For those interested in some of the more full planning factors; here is the Curl Manitoba and CCA Guidelines for Return to Play. If you want my thumbnail of selected relevant and significant rules of play and league considerations from that document:
Let's Play. I appreciate the likely concerns about returning to play, but I personally think it is practicable despite the Challenges and Risks involved. I know I need it for my sanity. Please do not hesitate to send me directly any questions from an individual or team perspective.

- d. consider teams of three players instead of normal four given only one sweeper allowed., ....
- e. of course if some current team members withdraw it will likely be possible to form different teams....

FINAL Three Draws. As discussed 13 March,
- Regular Published Draws. We will continue to curl as per the published draws; 21 , 28 Mar and 4 April. [See item below: COVID-19 Contingency]
- Withdrawal. If your team is not eager to play and wishes to withdraw, the Skip is asked to inform Draw Master Rick [[email protected]] no later than the Thursday 7 PM in the event draws must be re-arranged. Individuals withdrawing should coordinate with their skip.
- Trophies. The points and competition for the coveted Niners trophies has now ended. The Burnett team was unbeatable regardless and the B side was effectively a four way tie.
- Wrap Up Buffet. The final wrap up dinner (buffet) has been cancelled, due to challenges anticipating participants, however the regular breakfast and some concluding festivities are still available on 4 April after the final scheduled draw.
COVID19 Contingency. Watch here for any activation of a COVID 19 Contingency Plan. No immediate concern for the weekend of 14 - 15 March! [Posted 13 MARCH]
Standings. End Round 2 Standings are published. Remaining six draws will be double point value. [22 Feb 2020]
Affiliation Fees. It was decided the Niners League would pay the individual member affiliation fees from a small reserve rather than pester members for another payment. Next season the $10 will be built into the registration fees and if necessary those three or four players in multiple Deer Lodge leagues, who are being double billed, will be re-imbursed. (somehow) [24 Jan 2020]
'Affiliation' Fees. A quick overview. 10 years ago there was a $2 Curl Mb 'Affiliation fee per curler. And clubs also submitted a 'per sheet' Fee to Curl Canada which was imbedded in sheet rental price. The Curl Mb Fee has since gone up to $8, and the Curl Canada fee has been made more transparent (revenue neutral in theory) by being billed $2 directly to the curler. Click on the highlighted links to see further details. Now you know! [posted 23 Nov 2019]

Denis Update. [posted 27 Jul] Denis is back home now. If you want to visit, I have been a couple times (Rick F) contact Marilyn on their home phone if you have the last season Contact List. If not contact me for Marilyn's text. And check this out: Marilyn has a long time friend who happens to be, as they discovered during Dave H's visit, Dave's sister!!
Season 2018-19 Windup. A great season friends. Best we know is that all teams are returning next season (less a member here, there). Gary looking for two members! Beam this website around to friends and family! See you next season. Niners Exec will meet end August 2019 for planning for the 19-20 season. Anticipate next season fee to be $640/ team. (contact Me; Draw Master: [email protected]) [Posted 190331]
Executive Meeting 16 Feb. Execs met. Discussion:
- Funspiel on 30th March now a proper final game followed by $15 wind-up dinner.
- Not curling in April! Not eager to curl in April, happy with a 19 game season this year.
- Need to promote the club, all members to share link to this website, bring our friends / family for familiarization, breakfast
- Anticipate slight increase in fees next season, TBD
- Keep Denis and/or Draw Master apprised of your intentions for next season. Having an odd number of teams is not favourable !
- Suggestion we speed up play a bit, on the ice on time, opponents be in hack ready to shoot sooner, etc.
DRAW MASTER
[15 Feb 2019] No curling Saturday 16 Feb. Provincial Championships for Mixed Curling is on as per Deer Lodge Website. See you Sat 23 Feb for Final Round.
[9 Dec 2018] Standings are posted. Round 2 Draw is posted, A-side, B-side, 5 each side with Cross Over.
[25 Nov 2018] XMas Lunch. We will have an XMas lunch Sun 15 Dec after regular curling. Cost $15 (not$10). Sign up with Denis.
[2 Nov 2018] Decline / Cancel Curling 22 December. On 27 October we voted to decline a curling draw on 22 December. The Draw Sheet reflects / will reflect that as well.
[6 Oct 2018] The first draw for Saturday Niners is Saturday 13 October. It looks, from Denis, as though we may have 10 teams (a couple of them sparse in number)
Early. Arrive a bit early I should think so we can randomly pair up teams for the first draw.
Waivers. We also this year have to sign waivers regarding injuries / release of liability due to ice slips.
Recruit Players. Bring out a family member! A neighbour! A newcomer! We will find them a slider and a broom. Very clean shoes only though! The general consensus is that, given our demographic, a few spares and five person teams would ensure a sustainable league
Stay posted here for any updates.
